New Music Friday for August 28, 2026 is packed with major pop and hip-hop releases from Olivia Rodrigo, JENNIE, Rod Wave, Erykah Badu, The Alchemist, Fat Joe, Trippie Redd, Dahi and more. Here’s what deserves a spot in your weekend playlist.
New Music Friday Apparently Chose Violence This Week
Some Fridays give us three interesting songs, two albums nobody knew were coming and one deluxe edition containing approximately 47 songs that could have remained safely inside somebody’s laptop. August 28, 2026 is not one of those Fridays. Pop and hip-hop arrived with enough new material to turn the weekend into a full-time listening assignment. Olivia Rodrigo, JENNIE, Rod Wave, Erykah Badu and The Alchemist, Fat Joe, Trippie Redd, Dahi, E-40 and plenty more are all competing for the same limited supply of human attention. In other words, cancel that plan to “just quickly check the new releases.” You are not coming back quickly.
Olivia Rodrigo Brings Pop-Star Gravity to New Music Friday
On the pop side, Olivia Rodrigo is among the marquee names leading this week’s New Music Friday conversation with “serena joy.” Billboard included Rodrigo among the standout artists in its August 28 new-music guide, placing her in very prominent company for a release week already overflowing with recognizable names. Rodrigo has reached the point where a new song does not merely enter the streaming ecosystem; it arrives with a small weather system of theories, lyric screenshots, TikTok reactions and people immediately deciding which ex-boyfriend they believe it is about. Whether “serena joy” becomes another gigantic Rodrigo moment will depend on how listeners live with it beyond release day, but there is no question that her presence gives this Friday’s pop lineup some serious gravitational pull.

Please survive them before demanding seventeen bonus tracks.”
Rod Wave Has Entered the Chat With 24 Tracks
If JENNIE is practicing restraint, Rod Wave looked at restraint and politely declined. His seventh studio album, Don’t Look Down, arrives with 24 tracks in its digital edition, according to Complex, while physical editions contain 20. The record includes the singles “Feed the Streets,” “Piece of Your Love” and “Hustle,” and features just two guests: Summer Joy and Luv Von. That limited guest list is important because Rod Wave albums tend to work best when they feel like extended visits inside his own emotional universe. And what a universe it is: heartbreak, survival, ambition, reflection and enough piano chords to make perfectly happy people suddenly stare dramatically through a rainy window.

Rod Wave has never needed to reinvent himself every six months to remain interesting. His appeal comes from making deeply personal material feel enormous without sanding away the vulnerability that made listeners connect with him in the first place. For longtime fans, that familiarity is probably not a bug. It is the entire operating system. Organized Rhyme gives listeners another opportunity to hear a veteran MC operating in a rap landscape dramatically different from the one that introduced him decades ago.
Trippie Redd Adds #NDA to a Ridiculously Busy Rap Friday
Trippie Redd is also part of the August 28 pileup with #NDA. HotNewHipHop included the project alongside releases from Rod Wave, Fat Joe, Erykah Badu and The Alchemist, making this one of those Fridays where opening a streaming app feels less like choosing music and more like being handed a restaurant menu with 19 pages. Trippie has spent much of his career bouncing between melodic rap, emo-influenced material, distorted experimentation and outright chaos, so a new project from him carries the usual question... which version of Trippie showed up this time? There is only one reliable way to find out, and unfortunately it involves actually listening instead of arguing from the cover art.

Producer Dahi’s Black Boy (Alternative) deserves particular attention because of the names attached to it. HotNewHipHop reports that the project includes features from Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Vince Staples, among others. That is the kind of guest list capable of turning a producer project into mandatory listening before anyone has even finished breakfast. Dahi has worked across the boundaries of rap, R&B and alternative music for years, so the project’s title feels appropriately broad. And whenever Kendrick Lamar appears anywhere near a tracklist, the internet immediately transforms into a forensic laboratory. Somewhere, somebody is already zooming into a waveform looking for hidden messages.
Yung Miami Calls Lil Baby and Kodak Black for the “Spend Dat” Remix
The singles department is not exactly relaxing either. Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” remix arrives with Lil Baby and Kodak Black, giving the track the classic remix treatment: take something already moving, add two major rap names and see whether the temperature increases. HotNewHipHop highlighted the remix among this Friday’s key song releases. The format remains one of hip-hop’s oldest reliable strategies because sometimes the smartest artistic decision really is, “You know what this song needs? More rappers.”

E-40 Continues His Campaign Against Retirement
Bay Area legend E-40 also returns with Turning My Money Over. HotNewHipHop included the album in both its August release calendar and its August 28 roundup. At some point historians may discover that E-40 has actually been recording continuously since the invention of sound. His longevity is absurd. More importantly, his influence remains deeply embedded in West Coast rap vocabulary, cadence and independent hustle. Lancey Foux contributes THE TIME OF OUR LIVES to Friday’s album schedule, adding another dimension to a release day already moving between mainstream rap, experimental production, veteran hip-hop and alternative sounds. The British artist has developed a lane shaped by fashion, futuristic production and a style that does not fit neatly inside the traditional American rap template. His inclusion helps illustrate how useless the phrase “hip-hop sounds like this now” has become. Hip-hop sounds like approximately 700 things now, frequently before lunch.

The absurd part is that everything above barely empties the inbox. HotNewHipHop’s August 28 list also includes releases from YNW Melly, Majid Jordan, DC THE DON, Sajkeena and midwxst, Vory, K Carbon, Dave Blunts, Babyfather, CZARFACE and Frankie Pulitzer, Headie One, Jay Worthy with George Clinton and LNDN DRGS, and others. This is the part of New Music Friday nobody tells you about: eventually listening to music starts resembling administrative work. You begin with excitement and end three hours later maintaining a spreadsheet titled “Albums I Swear I’m Getting Back To.”
Streaming has fundamentally changed release culture. We now receive more music in one Friday than previous generations might have encountered across months, which is wonderful until you remember that human beings stubbornly continue to possess only two ears. Still, this abundance creates something exciting... Olivia Rodrigo can sit beside Rod Wave, who can sit beside JENNIE, who can sit beside Erykah Badu and The Alchemist, while E-40 casually reminds everyone he has been here longer than half the apps delivering the songs.
That mixture is what makes a genuinely stacked New Music Friday fun. There is no single sound dominating the conversation. There is simply a ridiculous amount to discover.
