Madonna leads the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with 11 nominations, beating Taylor Swift and proving that more than four decades after her first iconic VMA moment, the Queen of Pop is still very much in the game.
Madonna Just Walked Back Into the VMAs Like She Owns the Place
Madonna is officially leading the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards nominations with 11 nods, which is a wonderfully dramatic way of reminding everyone that retirement apparently was never added to her vocabulary. Taylor Swift follows with nine nominations, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven each. Madonna is nominated for some of the night's biggest prizes, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. In other words, the Queen of Pop did not come back to politely wave from the audience. She came for the Moon Persons.
“Confessions II” Is Doing More Than Keeping the Dance Floor Busy
A major reason for Madonna's impressive nomination haul is Confessions II, the follow-up to her dance-pop era-defining Confessions on a Dance Floor. Her visual project “Confessions II – The Film” scored a coveted Video of the Year nomination. That puts Madonna against a heavyweight field that includes Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bruno Mars, and GENER8ION with Yung Lean. Four decades into her VMA relationship, Madonna is still getting invited to the cool table — although at this point, let's be serious, she probably owns the table.
Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter Brought Their Love — and Got Nominated for It
Madonna's collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” is also having a very good awards season. The track earned recognition in major categories including Song of the Year and Best Collaboration, adding another generation-spanning moment to Madonna's résumé. Carpenter may represent a newer era of pop domination, but pairing her with Madonna feels less like passing the torch and more like Madonna saying, “Cute torch. I'm keeping mine too.”
More Than 40 Years Later, MTV and Madonna Are Still in This Relationship
Madonna and the VMAs go back to the very beginning. Her infamous 1984 “Like a Virgin” performance became one of the defining moments in MTV history, and she later received the Video Vanguard Award in 1986. She has continued collecting VMA recognition across every decade of her career, and in 2026 she is once again the most-nominated artist of the year. Some relationships fade. Madonna and MTV apparently prefer sequels, costume changes and occasional cultural chaos.
When Are the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards?
The 2026 MTV VMAs will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, 2026, with the ceremony broadcast on CBS and MTV and streamed on Paramount+. Fans can vote online in 13 categories ahead of the ceremony. As of the nomination announcement, Madonna may already be leading the scoreboard, but we'll have to wait until VMA night to see how many Moon Persons actually make the trip home with her.
Whether Madonna wins one award, eleven awards or simply arrives wearing something that causes the internet to malfunction for 48 hours, her 2026 VMA run is already notable. Leading the nominations more than four decades after helping turn the VMAs into must-watch television is not exactly standard pop-star behavior. Then again, Madonna has spent most of her career making “standard” sound painfully boring.
