Unfortunately, there is one giant emotional catch: Netflix has confirmed that Season 5 will be the fifth and final season of Outer Banks. Yes, after years of treasure maps, boat chases, family drama and teenagers surviving situations that would destroy the average adult before lunch, the Pogues are officially heading out for one last adventure.

Season 5 Picks Up After That Brutal Season 4 Ending

Anyone hoping the Pogues would begin Season 5 relaxing on a beach with absolutely no problems has clearly never watched this show. Netflix says the new season finds the group at its breaking point following JJ's death in Morocco. The Pogues are grieving, the Blue Crown is gone and several familiar threats are still hanging around because apparently nobody in this universe understands the phrase “enough is enough.”

Revenge Is Definitely on the Menu

Season 4 ended with Chandler Groff killing JJ, his own son, right in front of Kiara. Netflix's Season 5 preview makes it very clear that Kiara and the remaining Pogues aren't simply going home and journaling about their feelings. The final season sends the crew down a revenge-fueled path as they deal with Groff, their loss and whatever fresh insanity inevitably gets thrown at them along the way. Netflix's teaser even frames the final chapter around the Pogues going after revenge.

Who Is Returning for Outer Banks Season 5?

The surviving core Pogues are back, including Chase Stokes as John B, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Daviss as Pope and Carlacia Grant as Cleo. Drew Starkey also remains part of the Outer Banks world as Rafe Cameron, while J. Anthony Crane's Chandler Groff has some serious explaining to do — preferably from somewhere very far away from Kiara. Netflix's official Outer Banks hub and Season 5 materials continue to center the remaining Pogues as the story moves into its final chapter.

And Yes, JJ's Absence Is Going to Hurt

There really isn't a gentle way around this one. JJ's death completely changes the group going into Season 5. He wasn't just another member of the Pogues; his recklessness, loyalty and impressive ability to turn a bad situation into an objectively worse situation were a huge part of the show's personality. Netflix's official synopsis specifically describes the Pogues as mourning the “heart of their crew,” so expect JJ's absence to shape much of the emotional story rather than being brushed aside after one sad montage.

Outer Banks Is Going Out the Only Way It Knows How

After four seasons of buried treasure, shipwrecks, betrayals, romances, near-death experiences and enough missing gold to make an accountant cry, Outer Banks has a lot to wrap up. Season 5 has to deal with JJ's death, Groff, the Blue Crown, the Pogues' futures and the small matter of actually ending one of Netflix's biggest young-adult adventure dramas. Basically, the writers have chosen peace by choosing absolutely no peace whatsoever.

Outer Banks Season 5 premieres Thursday, August 20, 2026, on Netflix. Netflix has repeatedly confirmed the date through its official Tudum coverage and Media Center, so this one can safely go on the calendar in permanent marker. The final-season trailer and promotional campaign are already underway, meaning the Pogue farewell is officially very, very close.

Whether you started watching for the treasure hunts, the relationships, Rafe being Rafe or simply to see how many times one group of people can narrowly avoid death in coastal locations, Season 5 is the end of an era. The Pogues have one final shot at revenge, answers and maybe — just maybe — getting through an adventure without somebody falling off a boat. Don't bet heavily on that last one.
