Celebrity business moves got expensive this week. From Shay Mitchell’s $210 million BÉIS deal to a record Lakers sale and new launches from Tracee Ellis Ross and Paris Hilton, here’s what happened.
Shay Mitchell Just Put a $210 Million Price Tag on Packing Cute
Apparently, selling luggage can eventually lead to needing a much larger suitcase for all the money. Samsonite announced a deal to acquire BÉIS, the travel and lifestyle brand founded by Shay Mitchell, for $210 million. Mitchell launched BÉIS in 2018 and serves as its chief creative officer, while Beach House Group owns a majority stake. The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, assuming the usual regulatory paperwork behaves itself. For celebrity brands, this is the kind of move that gets attention because it is not another perfume launch or vaguely motivational beverage—it is an actual nine-figure exit.
Bob Iger and Josh Kushner Went Shopping and Somehow Bought the Lakers
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner agreed to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal valued at $12.5 billion, according to reports this week. Yes, billion with a “b,” because apparently regular hobbies have been discontinued. The transaction would set a record valuation for a U.S. professional sports franchise and still requires approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors. For Iger, who spent decades managing some of entertainment’s biggest properties, owning part of one of basketball’s most recognizable brands feels almost suspiciously on-theme.
Tracee Ellis Ross Is Bringing the Good Hair Energy to Hardware
Tracee Ellis Ross’ Pattern Beauty expanded its Heat Collection with a Vibrating Flat Iron, Blow Out Primer and Detox Shampoo. The new flat iron is designed for curls, coils and tight textures and joins Pattern’s continued expansion beyond traditional shampoos and conditioners into styling tools. The products debuted through Pattern and are rolling into Ulta during August. Translation: Pattern is steadily trying to own more of the textured-hair routine instead of politely occupying one shelf in the shower.
Paris Hilton and Betsey Johnson Have Entered the Sparkly Chat
Meanwhile, Paris Hilton teamed with Betsey Johnson on a fashion capsule inspired by Johnson’s archives, mixing the designer’s famously maximalist aesthetic with Hilton’s extremely well-documented relationship with Y2K glamour. The collaboration arrived this week alongside a campaign and includes the sort of bows, sparkle and unapologetic excess one would reasonably expect when these two names appear on the same label. Minimalism was presumably informed by email and declined the invitation.
The interesting part of this week’s celebrity business news is the range of moves. Mitchell has reached the acquisition stage, Iger is moving into major sports ownership, Ross is broadening a consumer brand into new product categories, and Hilton is continuing to turn her public image into collaborative commercial IP. Celebrity entrepreneurship is increasingly less about slapping a famous name on merchandise and more about building assets that can expand, attract institutional buyers or become meaningful ownership stakes. One might almost think there was a business plan involved.
