New Music Friday Has Entered the Chat
Congratulations, we survived another week, which means the music industry has rewarded us by dropping enough new music to completely destroy whatever playlist organization we had going on.
Friday, September 18, brings a seriously busy mix of pop, alternative pop and hip-hop, with everyone from Miley and Carly Rae Jepsen to AZ Chike and Rakim showing up to fight for your headphones. In other words, your “I’ll listen to it later” list is about to become a full-time job.
Miley, Carly and Tove Lo Came to Keep Pop Busy
On the pop side, Miley leads the conversation with her new album Bass Persuades, while Carly Rae Jepsen delivers the 24-track double album Day and Night. Tove Lo is also back with Estrus, because apparently subtle album titles are overrated. Add beabadoobee’s heavier, grunge-flavored Pylon and Lizzy McAlpine’s Angel, and pop fans have everything from dance-floor energy to staring-out-the-window-like-you’re-in-a-music-video emotions covered.
Hip-Hop Is Not Taking Friday Off Either
Rap listeners have plenty to dig into, starting with Los Angeles rapper AZ Chike’s No Rest For The Wicked and NoCap’s Heaven On Mars. Then there’s The Godbody, bringing Rakim, Kurupt and Masta Killa together with production from Rakim and Nick Wiz and a guest list that includes names such as Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and KRS-One. Yes, that lineup sounds a little like somebody unlocked the hip-hop legends expansion pack.
The Singles Are Trying to Steal the Weekend Too
Albums aren’t getting all the attention. Future and Metro Boomin linked with Yung Lean for “That’s It,” Travis Scott dropped “RHYNO,” and Anderson .Paak joined Cordae for “A Good Day.” Joy Crookes and Denzel Curry also teamed up for “Painkiller.” Basically, there are enough collaborations floating around this week to make your streaming app ask, “Are you still listening?” Yes. Obviously. Mind your business.
This is one of those Fridays where genre loyalty becomes inconvenient. You can start with Miley for the pop moment, jump over to Carly Rae Jepsen and Tove Lo, get loud with beabadoobee, then completely change the temperature with AZ Chike, NoCap and The Godbody. And because apparently we enjoy making simple things difficult, throw those new Travis Scott, Future/Metro/Yung Lean and Anderson .Paak/Cordae singles into the queue too. Shuffle responsibly.
